Are You Ready to Start a Garden That Provides You With Year-Round Vegetables?

A garden that will allow you to become less dependent on the system, makes you more self-sufficient, and allows you to enjoy year-round abundance?

That's all we ever wanted.

But it wasn't too long ago, if you would have told me that I would live the lifestyle I’m currently living and grow the majority of food for my family, I would have probably never believed you.

In fact, after we came back from our overseas travels and working on a wide diversity of farms we decided to put into practice what we'd learned.

Although we were really passionate about growing food, we'd never started a garden before

But our vision was simple... We wanted to create a place where we could raise our children, grow our own food, and live a simpler life, reconnected to nature.

So, when the opportunity arose, we obtained a small piece of land and converted a big part into a garden to start growing our own food.

Our biggest dream was to just live a simple life on the land, and provide for our own needs.

So, we did what most new gardeners do. We got ourselves a whole bunch of free horse manure, created compost piles, the garden beds, bought ourselves some seedlings, and transplanted them into the garden.

At that point, we were over the moon, we were growing our own food!

We were doing it following the methods we'd learned, and for the first time ever, we were enjoying fresh vegetables that we've grown in our own garden.

But as the season progressed, we couldn’t help but notice that beds started to become empty.

We started to notice that we were not nearly growing as much food as we would have liked to have.

And in fact, we were in complete darkness regarding the understanding of what we should plant, when and where we should plant things, and how much of it we needed to plant that would allow us to at least grow the majority of our own food.

Instead, we were overwhelmed by the 20 zucchini plants that we transplanted that were now giving us a couple of wheelbarrows full of zucchini that we didn’t know what to do with, because you can only consume and process so much of something.

And yet, despite the abundance of one specific vegetable, we barely had any carrots, lettuce, cucumbers, and all the other delicious vegetables that are out there.

Although we were enjoying for the first time ever our own healthy food, it was not even close to being enough that we wanted and needed for our own consumption.

We had no clue when we had to start seedlings, how many seeds we should grow for each of the vegetables, where and when we should transplant them, and how often we should sow them - not to mention the constant guessing we were doing in the garden and the amount of time we wasted on trying to figure it out whilst the growing season was in full swing.

Unfortunately, we learned the hard way that when you make a mistake in the garden, in the most ideal situation it would only set you back a couple of weeks, but often you’ll have to wait a full year to plant something again since specific vegetables only can be grown during specific months of the year.

Now, most people would already be happy that they’ve grown some of their own food, and sure, it was a great start, but I’ve seen what is possible, and to me, we were just getting by in terms of the amount of food we were growing.

Every day we went back into the garden and knew that we should plant something, but had no clue where, when, or how much of it, that would provide us with the right amount of vegetables and allowed us to take care of our own needs.

With as much time as I’d put into learning this craft, and the amount of effort I poured into it, I wanted to be further along.

I wanted to be able to provide for my partner and make a positive impact on our well-being, as well as the lives of our friends, family, and our community, by providing them with any surplus food we could be having.

I wanted to become more resilient and independent, and simply put, I just want to know where my food comes from and be able to eat healthy and really good vegetables consistently, that I’ve grown in my own garden, rather than just a couple of vegetables at the end of spring into the summer and then nothing again for another 6 months leaving us with having to buy our produce at expensive prices elsewhere.

But we were not there yet.

And as we started our garden and tried our best to grow our own food, something happened that changed our entire lives.

My wife Charlene and I had been together for 5 years at the time, and we got the beautiful news that she was pregnant with our first child.

And, it’s a story I don’t often tell, but the feeling that it gave me was something I’d never experienced before. It was a combination of happiness, love, and excitement, but also anxiety, and a healthy dose of fear.

And it was at that moment that I realized, that if I was going to be able, as a father, to provide for my family, not only financially, but also mentally and physically, and provide them with healthy homegrown food, something had to change.

I couldn’t continue to approach gardening as chaotically, unorganized, and unproductive as I was doing.

I needed to come up with a plan that would allow me to enjoy my time spent with the family, yet provide for most if not all of our own vegetable needs.

And over the next period, I read every book I could find on creating a garden plan. I read every blog post, watched all related videos, listened to hours and hours of podcasts, and even took a course on planning.

And basically, everyone seemed to agree about what I should do, and everyone had the same method.

But the problem with this old method is that it doesn’t provide us with the accurate data and information that we need, so that we can predictably know the yields we get, when we have to start our seedlings and transplant them, how much of each of the vegetables we need to grow to get to our desired outcome, and where to plant them and what to do on a daily basis.

We’ve done this before, and as we’ve experienced, although we did get some food from the garden, it was not nearly as much as we had liked to have.

In fact, the issue I have with this old method is that there is simply too much room for error.

What if the information provided is not specific to my climate or hemisphere?

And what if I want to know exactly how many plants of each vegetable I need to plant so that I can expect a consistent harvest from my garden that will provide my family and I with the right amount of food, including enough that we can then preserve so that in the colder winter months we can still enjoy our homegrown food?

Do I simply just have to guess and plant a bunch of each variety in the hopes that it will provide us with enough food?

And what about the organization?

What if I want to know exactly what I have to do in the garden on a daily or weekly basis so that I know for sure when I have to start seedlings, how many seeds I need to sow, and where they will ultimately have to be planted in the garden so that I can ensure there won’t be empty spots for too long allowing us to grow more food in the same garden space.

As you can see, it was quite frustrating having to go through a process that was confusing, incomplete and didn’t provide me with a clear step-by-step plan that allowed me to just focus on what I love doing most: spending time in the garden efficiently, and growing food with and for my family.

I mean, if you get ONE thing wrong with planning, it’s almost always impossible to correct those issues in the middle of the growing season, and with a bit of luck, you might be able to do it better next year.

But, the problem for me was that I didn’t have the time to do it better next year. I didn’t want to go through a long and slow process of learning how to do it better next year.

I had already been down that road before. In fact, it was the exact method I’d tried last time. And I wanted to be able to provide for my family now.

So, I decided that I couldn’t just guess, and hope that I’d be able to grow enough to provide for most of our own needs.

I did that before, I made the list of vegetables we like to eat, looked at roughly when it was the right season for them, created a rough planting schedule and assigned the location in the garden...

And the results?

  • Too much of one specific vegetable
  • Large gaps between plantings
  • Wasting lots of space and time
  • Clueless about what to plant, how much, when, and where
  • Going through a frustrating experience knowing that we were not even close to growing a decent portion of our daily consumption, or providing us with year-round homegrown food (not to mention the non-existing production in the colder winter months)
  • Having to go back to the grocery store

I knew I had to find a better way.

A way in which I could nearly predict with 100% certainty that I would have the right amount of vegetables ready for consumption or preservation when we needed to have them.

A way in which I knew exactly when to start seedlings of specific vegetables, a way in which I knew exactly how much of each vegetable to grow and where to plant them, and most of all, a way in which with a simple look on a plan, I knew what I had to do during each day of the season, that would allow us to have year-round vegetables.

So, that’s what I did.

I spent hours, days, and many sleepless nights, developing a process that was not only simple to follow but allowed me to get the results I desired, without leaving any stone unturned.

I wanted to make sure that I was able to plant the exact number of plants of each vegetable, which would give me predictable yields that were in line with our personal consumption, and specifically adapted to our climate.

I wanted to make sure that I accounted for every date on which we had to either seed or transplant vegetables, including the placement, yields, and taking into consideration crop rotation and succession planting, that would allow us to grow the most amount of food, with the garden space we had available.

In other words, I came up with my own method for planning our garden.

A method in which we can ensure, that we can have year-round homegrown vegetables, despite the long winters we experienced.

And once I had my first plan in place, following this new method, it was time to put it to the test.

It was time to follow the plan, grow each of the individual vegetables, and see if my efforts would pay off… And needless to say, I was quite nervous.

I knew I had developed a clear and efficient plan, but after my previous gardening season, I prayed that this one would be different.

I knew I could grow at least some portion of the food we personally consumed, because we’ve done that before, but I figured, if I could follow the plan and grow at least 20 to 50% of our yearly consumption, I knew I was on the right track and could continue to optimize my planning process until I’m completely satisfied with the results, and I’m able to provide year-round homegrown vegetables to my family.

So, as the season started, we started to follow the new plan we made.

We sowed our seeds following the calendar, planted the seedlings on the right locations on the right times...

As the months passed by, we followed one rotation after the other.

When vegetables became ready, we harvested them and we were straight away ready with several week-old transplants that were waiting to be planted where we just emptied a bed.

We completely eliminated any empty space in the garden between plantings.

Every time we had a question or a doubt about what we had to do, we looked at the calendar, and it provided us directly with tasks to do for any given time during the growing season.

At the end of the season, we didn’t grow the 20 to 50% of food we’d dreamed of...

In fact, we did not only surpass our personal goal of growing 50% of our own food, but we grew so much food, that we even started making an income out of it!

In the first year following this planning process, we grew 50% of our own food and made an extra €20,000 euros by selling vegetables and herbs to our local community.

In the second year, we grew close to 75% of our own vegetables, and made €50.000 euros.

And in the third and subsequent years, we were able to grow up to 90% of our own food and made on average €70.000 euros with vegetables and herbs that we sold to our local community, all between the months of April to November.

To say that this single element of gardening has changed our lives is quite an understatement.

We went from chaotic, unorganized, and a few vegetables, to living our dream life and growing the majority of our own food.

And the funny thing is, we didn’t even have to become better gardeners.

We didn’t need to learn a special trick to grow our vegetables successfully or use a special blend of fertilizers, or whatever.

All we needed was to follow a plan that was based on our specific climate and based on what we as a family wanted to eat on a weekly basis.

A plan that told us exactly what to do, when to do it, and where to do it.

Over the years we completely refined the entire planning process to ensure that it is as simple to implement as possible, by following the steps of the planning framework.

If you’re just starting your first garden or trying to successfully become more self-sufficient, creating a garden plan is the single most impactful thing you can do to enjoy more food from your garden consistently.

But how do you create one?
